Despite calls for full evacuation, Ukrainian forces "continue to maintain circular defense" of Mariupol, according to the staff
Even as Russian forces
established control around Mariupol, the Ukrainian general staff claimed its
forces "continue to sustain the circle defensive" inside the port
city.
On Tuesday, shortly after
midnight, the news was made.
As evacuation lanes from the
city have been surrounded on all sides by Russian soldiers, Mariupol Mayor
Vadym Boichenko warned early Monday that the city was "in the hands of
occupiers."
Boichenko advocated for the
"total evacuation" of the city's remaining residents. According to
Ukrainian officials, 90 percent of the city's residential buildings were
damaged or destroyed during the recent severe fighting.
